Introducing “Ask the Gimp”

From my perspective, the disability rights movement has four interconnected goals/functions:

  1. To effect change through the political process
  2. To work in the academy to create a body of disability-related literature
  3. To empower ourselves and one another
  4. To educate the general public

I think we've done well on the first three, but unfortunately we haven't always been great at fostering dialogue with the non-disabled world.

One thing I know to be true is that most people have questions about disability that they don't ask, for fear of sounding ignorant or offensive, or just for lack of opportunity. I also know that bringing those questions out of the shadows is the best place to start breaking down social barriers.

To that end, I'm introducing a new feature here at Go Becky: Ask the Gimp. This is your opportunity to ask those questions in an anonymous forum.

I hope that, over time, this will become something of a FAQ for disability issues. So go ahead, ask your question, and I'll do my best to answer!
