I have a phone date with Max Linn for Congress

I've seen ads for some guy, Max Linn for Congress, ("Linn for Congress" is apparently his last name, judging by his PR campaign) on TV lately... ok, to be honest, I've caught glimpses of them while skipping commercial breaks... but haven't given it any thought -- except, possibly, "Oh Jeebus, it's only April!"

So I get a phone call this morning -- I guess they're calling all Dems in the district. Mr. Linn for Congress is doing something I've honestly never heard of: his campaign was making appointments for him to personally call anyone who wants to talk to him, about anything. I was intrigued, so I agreed. I have a phone date with Max Linn for Congress tomorrow night! (Wooo!)

You can tell how seriously I was taking all this. I live in Florida's 10th Congressional District; "my" representative is Bill Young, the longest-serving Republican in the House. No Democrat has seriously challenged him as long as I've been following local politics, even as the district has become more Democrat-friendly over the last few election cycles.

So I was surprised when I checked out the website of Max Linn for Congress. The dude is taking square aim at all of Young's positions. He's pro-choice, pro-civil-union (not ideal, but this is Florida), anti-Iraq, anti-Gitmo, anti-Patriot-Act... in short, exactly the kind of person I'd like to send to Washington. (Oh, and he's a native!) He's explicitly riding the "change" wave -- there's even a picture of him and Obama on the site (which does make me wonder what would happen in the unlikely event that Hillary was at the top of the ticket). Given the general backlash against Republicans and the growing number of young voters in the district (because of USF St. Pete), I think Max Linn for Congress (yes, I'm totally calling him that) might actually have a shot at giving crusty ol' C.W. a run for his money.

So I'll keep you posted after my phone date. Who knows, this might be the opportunity to get back into the grassroots work I've been looking for. /idealistic smile/
